Tail of Comet Lovejoy from 30 N!

I just came back from Mt. Mulan, a mountain far away from Wuhan, where the sky is sufficiently dark, and more importantly, the majority of the thick dust layers, prevailing all cities of mainland China, has been gotten rid off. After my visual comet hunting session, I began to first observe the tail of comet Lovejoy visually, yet unfortunately, I failed to detect any hint of it, which was in fact within my expectation due to the excessively poor geometric position of the comet for people in the northern hemisphere. Through my visual attempt, I could only see the haze occupying the skies below 3° above the horizon, and I think this factor might well have led to my failure. Frustrated by negative visual observation, I stuck to taking photos of the position through a DSLR with a 17-40 mm f/4 lens set at 17mm, f/4. In every original image, again I failed to notice the furthest end of the tail projecting tiltedly up from the horizon. But now by stacking these images and background-subtraction, I managed to see striae or something like that appear at the expected position!!

I will think up ways to visualise the image after the conclusion of my finals. I have one more finals to go through — Fourier Optics. In addition, I’m planning plans to go to the southernmost land of China so as to catch the comet as soon as possible when I can back home. I really can’t wait! I’m fully sure this must be one of the most legendary and spectacular comets throughout the 21st century!

I’v been attempting to employ EXORB to perform orbital calculations lately. Before I always used FindOrb, another outstanding toolkit to carry out similar functions, however, I’v been told that EXORB prevails FindOrb in finding linkages. I once fed da known Kracht sungrazer linkage 2005 W4 = 2011 E1 to FindOrb, and consequently da outcome went outrageous even though constraints hav been set. It made me even more determined to master EXORB.

My first attempt was quite simple — to compute orbital solutions for da newly discovered comet P/2011 V1 (Boattini). My settings are as follows:

Obtaining da solution was not that easy as I’d expected. Da value in toggle D had been repeatedly tested until da program rendered me a reasonable solution, which can b seen as follows:

Da solution’s quite close to d one given by MPEC K11-V13.

Then I proceeded to calculate orbits for sungrazing comets observed by LASCO. For reference I first tried to solve a comet in a single apparition. Here I take C/1996 X3 as d example.

Da toggles are set to a bit different from those used for finding orbital solutions for P/2011 V1:

A parabolic solution is assumed before da computation. Noticeably da program tends not to give me an orbital solution that “seems like” a Kracht sungrazer. Instead, it frequently rendered me a retrograde orbit, with relatively large residuals. Therefore I had to repeat da computation again n again, until a reasonable solution was found:

Da next step is to save da raw solution in STATING.DAT, which will automatically return to da toggles n toggled off U. Then I set X to 3.2 n perform da calculation again:

Now I toggle on K as well as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6:

Now add a new apparition to C/1996 X3, turn off 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 n toggle on 5:

Strictly speaking, I ought to delete those observations that generate large residuals. However, I found that all observations from 1996 lead to da largest residuals. If I remove them all, da linkage solution turns to meaningless. I suspect my solution for da single apparition for C/1996 X3 wasn’t da best solution, but a solution with residuals in da proximity of its local minimum. Anyway, it’d b a successful linkage solution.

My goal’s to master da way to find out da linkage solutions for an object from arbitary num of different apparitions. Evidently before I achieve it I still got a arduous journey to get hang of EXORB.

A blunder amongst numerous fabulous successful saves that deny varies of attempts from opponents will undoubtably bring da poor man infame. Yet it may b not that unfair after all, as it’s da last defense of da team. He gets da accountability n juz needs to pay off every effort to deny evry attempt. However hard it may b, I believe that a goalie’ll bravely stand and weather d all without any complaint.

My first new STEREO comet? No way!

Da day before yesterday I came across a faint blob of light heading towards da Sun when calibrating HI1A images for da brightest Kreutz sungrazer observed within at least da last two years SOHO-2143.

See it? Da sungrazer was moving in a stream of corona, from lower left to upper right.

Initially I thot it had already been discovered in LASCO; it might b Michal Kusiak’s C2 detection at 9:52:03 on Oct 02 in da report page. Yet after referring to SOHO-2143 n a following companion comet or its debris detected by Zhijian Xu on Oct 03, I quite convinced myself that my suspect must hav been an undiscovered object in LASCO, in that da time difference between a sungrazer leaving off da FOV of HI1A n entering da FOV of LASCO C2 should b around 20 hrs with respect to both SOHO-2143 n SOHO-2145. As for my suspect, it left off HI1A at around 21:29 UT, Oct 01. If Michal’s detection were my suspect’s apparition in C2, da time difference was only 14 hrs, how seemingly implausible!

However, fianlly I had to yield to d orbital solution with linked observations measured in HI1A by me n in LASCO C2 by Michal. It totally smashed da very possibility to b an undiscovered comet.

Acceptably, da linkage was perfect! Wat a brilliant typical Kreutz sungrazer! It wasn’t my day… But nv mind, I din’t take it serious. After all I picked it up when literally having no preparation for any new discovery. Things won’t get so easy to mete out wat we call a discovery. My attention’l be kept focusing on analysis in a scientific manner. As far as I’m concerned, it’s physical mechanisms behind phenomena that will b of great significance towards me. Anyway, finally, as before, cố lên to myself!

此二日凡墨汁用磬而未嘗市，字不可一日不習，反之則如退一年，用筆如輕於毫。故奢侈一番，以一得閣寶墨而書於宣紙。所書著實大失所望，字已無往日之靈性，涂有其形，不得精神。嚮之來皆從簡節約，委宣紙而不用，只書報紙之上。久之，竟無再悉宣紙之性，譬如甲士久不以武練，兵入庫，一旦兵燹起狼烟，復歸戰場，疏乎戰陣行伍，不悉刀槍戈戟，自是敗北而流血漂櫓，伏尸百萬，戰死者十之八九。書家不必衝鋒陷陣，暴身體於亂矢雜箭之中，自然無性命之虞。然其筆如鋒，得道者，揮毫自如，力透紙背，一氣呵成，章法洞然。豈有宣紙之弗聽調遣而書者可悠然之理哉！

昨日以降錄白樸元曲《天凈沙》一首，曰：

「春山暖日和風，闌干樓閣簾櫳，楊柳秋千院中。嗁鶯舞燕，小橋流水飛紅。」

然字字不得意，或章法混亂無度，或毀於裝字結構，或無曩之氣勢豪邁。而今宣紙已磬，只餘邊角尚可用。如此揮霍，豈不痛哉！

是圖所示乃是最後之作，必為書家所不齒。不見氣勢，空有其表。實想付之一炬化為殘焦，然火柴去甚遠，取之反勞體力，若是就地取材，鉆木取火，亦勞筋骨。思來想去，還棄於亂紙堆中，以食蟲蠹之類，飽之而書籍自可然免害脫災存世長遠。

曩者，自豪言及耄耋回首且堪比書聖右軍，而期弱冠或而立之後可逾。今即弱冠，叵耐才思且退，不復當年，文通殘錦。見書聖跡，如攬神品，喟嘆弗如。

唯希冀勤可救余，伴之以悟性，方達爐火純青之境。勉乎哉！

吾頭

今日頭部復遇強烈撞擊，撞擊之後，瞬間視力喪失，但旋即雙目又重見光明。此番已是今歲第二次有這等經歷矣。前次皆因守門動作甚猛而頭部狠砸至桂操至破爛流丟一片假草地上，算是咎由自取。這回仍是守門，然場地變更至工學部之草場，怎奈與人狠狠相撞。如今想起，應言句Cám ơn người có lòng tốt才是，倘若太陽穴遭猛擊，慮及彼時雙方速度差，我必然休克，甚者更嚴重。

當時值訓練中，阿迪力帶球繞桿後起速欲射門，我視作單刀球，是故為封死角度便迅速出擊，然後記憶已然蒙龍難憶，相撞細節更不得知曉。簡而述之，我將球破壞掉之一瞬間，其膝恰好擊中了我右耳後側枕骨。因而剎那間我兩眼一黑，所幸旋即恢復視力……

我疼痛難持，於是唯有委棄訓練而稍為休息了。活動頭部，方發覺頭不可右轉，否則便十分疼痛。阿迪力亦受傷而無法訓練，撞擊之後其行走蹣跚然。秋風起，冷雨霏霏。身上衣物早已被雨水打得透濕，益覺寒冷刺骨。所幸訓練不久即結束可廻寢室已。

夜晚中，前半段尚覺無事，叵耐入深夜方覺得暈暈沉沉。莫不成又是輕微腦震蕩？莫胡思了，尚無嘔吐之狀。此番經歷，當值一記。歲在辛卯，九月初三日。若天朗氣清，薄暮時分本可分明見一彎月牙，狀如扁舟，低垂於空。而今值陰雨，不可得見。遙想當年樂天曾於某歲九月初三日題詩一首，現附之以饗於己：

《暮江訡》
一道殘陽鋪水中，半江瑟瑟半江紅。
可憐九月初三夜，露似真珠月似弓。

Today I eventually found out da reason y my legend function was inavailable. Close scrutiny revealed that ther were overall three files which definited da function itself, different from each other respectively. I attempted to force all of da three versions to come to agreement according to Goddard’s, yet da function still simply refused to run. I started to suspect if da definition by Goddard would b problematic.

When I finished reading its explanation within da file, all came to enlighten me! It reads

NOTE: This procedure is *deprecated* because IDL 8.0 contains a LEGEND() function written in IDL. Both can be used provided that the one found later in one’s !PATH is explicitly compiled in one’s startup file. However we strongly recommend the use of AL_LEGEND, which is identical in use to LEGEND. legend.pro will eventually be removed from future releases of the IDL Astron library.

This procedure makes a legend for a plot. The legend can contain a mixture of symbols, linestyles, Hershey characters (vectorfont), and filled polygons (usersym). A test procedure, legendtest.pro, shows legend’s capabilities. Placement of the legend is controlled with keywords like /right, /top, and /center or by using a position keyword for exact placement (position=[x,y]) or via mouse (/position).

No wonder would I fail to exploit da legend function! It had been deprecated according to da Goddard’s file! After deleting d other files which contradicted IDL 8.0′s definition, I had da legend() function work again!

Nor has da problem been entirely tackled. I realized that combinations of scripts, perhaps inappropriately, removed da functions of TexToIDL. For instance, if I intend to display Greek words or symbols, only da first Romanized letter would appear. Ther may well be some conflict between these lines.

Well, something beyond, today I played a pick-up match against Đội Tuyển Bóng Đá Việt Nam with da university soccer team. For consideration of my convalescence, da coach arranged me as a substitute. We scored an opener at da first half, yet had to b forced to draw soon after da second half due to lapses between our back n da goali. Facts hav proven that it wouldn’t be anything serious, for we resumed fierce attacks with harvest of two more scores. I substituted da goali at around 75-min. Quite relaxed around my area, I received few threats. Da referee whistled d end of da friendly match, n da match board fixed at a victory of 3-1 against Đội Việt Nam.

Judging from today’s match, I think I could become da No.1 keeper soon. Despite elder than d other goalie, I’m a new comer so I must get evrything familiarized. Cố lên!

Damn, wher’s my legend?

Today I encountered with a weird error with IDL — I planed to edit my program which calculates da compund HG model by Marcus n juz ran d original one at first, however, I was notified with da words that da LEGEND is an undefined procedure or function n thus da plot halted! How come? All my attempts were proven to vain; I’m absolutely pretty kinda disappointed for da simple reason that I couldn’t fix it…

Besides, none has been recent days without any “accomplishment”. At least I’ve been learning writing routines to work with fits images. I’v created a fits image to make a 2-D Gaussian function:

It’s of great necessity for me to master da skills to process fits images and to make analysis with them within IDL. I deeply sense that public softwares for amateur astronomers hav ady failed to suffice me now. For instance, it’s painstaking for me to process LASCO n STEREO images by specified manners to achieve da target for serious photometry. So elaborate it’ll b, that none of da public softwares I possess, including Fitswork, MaxIm DL, IRIS, n ImageJ, hav da capability to simply carry out da work. Instead, IDL has.

Ok, b4 dreaming great dreams, pratically I hav to find out da ways to solve da problem with da LEGND() function. Lack of tutorials, I’m afraid it’ll b a truly arduous journey to tackle d error… Good luck to myself!
