Today’s observation

I made an observation on the 1 Ceres though I had to go to school. The weather was really good, mightbe the pour has cleaned all the dust away.
It was easy to lock onto this bright asteroid. The method was also making good use of the ι, θ Piscis Austrini… It must be an very easy thing for those who are familiar to the sky. Certainly, I recorded my observation, this is my sketch(The circle means my field).

70×
I’ve observed Uranus as well, but I didn’t do any record.
The whole observational time was from 17:50 UT~18:50 UT, weather: flouting clouds. Seeing: I Antoniadi. Transparency: AAAA 4/7. My telescope: refractor, D=100mm, F=700mm. My observational location: φ=+23°0912, λ=113°1854E. The Altitude of 1 Ceres: +27°40~+18°46. The Azimuth of 1 Ceres:+34°41~+45°11.

My fourth SOHO comet

C/2006 N3 (SOHO), detected on 14 July, 2006

Discovery story:
I discovered a bright Kreutz-II SOHO comet in the evening, July 14. I have to acknowledge that I found this comet very luckily.
Early in the evening, I’ve already downloaded the latest C3 images from the LASCO, and I’ve made a big mistake that I was chatting on the Böotes Forum instead of checking them at once. After that, I changed the images into b/w. I shifted them in order and immediately discovered a comet like object moving towards the sun. I was getting nervous as I might be later than other SOHO hunters. I already had four coordinates, however, I didn’t report it because I did NOT want to make too much noise report.
I waited and waited, refreshed the comet report page again and again. It was too long for me!! Finally, the image of 1118UT came out! I turned the color and measured the position…Yeah! It was a real one! I reported it at once and there was nobody before me.  I couldn’t be too lucky!

My fourth SOHO comet

My third SOHO-comet

C/2006 L4 (SOHO), detected on 05 June, 2006

(C2)
Discovery story:
June 05, 2006. It was Monday. The entrance examination for college was on so that I could stay at home. I did some reading as well as some reviews after my supper. Then, I turned on my computer and went to the LASCO to download the C2 images. The images were delayed. I firstly found a Non-group comet-like object in the upper-right images, with more C2 images coming out I denied my claim.
There were a large amount of Kreutz comets during this season. So I quickly move the images up and nothing was found. Not very long, more images came out, I immediately discovered a very very faint and fuzzy comet-like object at the lower edge of the three delayed C2 images. I quickly swithed the wheel on the mouse and measured the three coordinates and posted two of the coordinates on the comet report page at about nine o’clock in the evening. I was a little nervous because Hua Su had just retracted his claim a few minutes ago and the speed of my net was really slow. However, I was alright while I found no one had stepped before me. To prove my claim so I refreshed the LASCO again and downloaded more images. I was happy to find that I had successfully detect another more SOHO-comet. The reports which I posted at that moment are below.

My third SOHO-comet

Today’s observation

The sun is shining brightly outsides and the sky is still deep blue like the mighty ocean. I’ve finished my observation just an hour ago.
When I was going to sleep, I suddenly found the sky was very clear as well as the stars was smooth shimmering though situating in a major city. In a word, it was a good chance to make an observation. So I did. I moved my 10cm-refractor to the balcony where has a very wide sight.
I observed the asteroid 1 Ceres first because it was in the low position.Making use of the ι and θ Pisicis Austrini, I easily found the position where Ceres was. Ceres was 7.6 magnitude and it was almost in a straight line with SAO190604, whose magnitude is7.38, and SAO190588 at the magnitude of 9.03. I drew a sketch and I should sent it to my web, however, my webcam has been broken down. Once it’s okay, I will send my sketch. During this time, some annoying clouds interupted my observation so that it took me long to finish my sketch. The whole time that I used to observe 1 Ceres was from 3:20(19:20UT) to 4:30(20:30UT).
I observed Uranus, then. I found it easily because of its obvious round face on which I couldn’t tell any details. I estamated its magnitude was about 5.7. Certainly I’ve done a sketch on it, however, I can’t send it for the same reason which I wrote above.
Oh, I forgot to write down the observation on Perseid on 12~13 Aug. 2006.
I haven’t done too much for the bright moon, what’s more, I spent most time in observing the comet 177P/Barnard=P/2006 M3, though I finally failed. I’ve observed 29 meteors, maybe four of them weren’t shower meteor. The brightest one I saw that night occured at about 23:47(15:47UT), at the magnitude of -2, has splitted, and left a 3-second-long trail. I finished the observation at about 4:30(20:30UT). The most annoying thing was that I FORGOT to observe Mercury, that was really sucks!
Some on other things, Rob has found the comet C/2006 M4 (SWAN) in the C3 images. The report is below.

Today’s observation

My second SOHO comet

C/2006 K10 (SOHO), detected on 20 May, 2006

(C2)
Discovery Story:
I didn’t detect SOHO comets for a long time. During this time, I’ve missed a lot and made lots of noise-report. May 20, 2006, Saturday. I went home with Quanzhi, and when I was back, I did some homework first and then had my supper. As soon I finished my supper, I turned on my computer. No bad, The LASCO was working!
I soon downloaded some of the C2 images(during this season, almost no Kreutz comet is found in C3 images). I didn’t find anything until I downloaded the image of 1331UT, there was a comet like object at the bottom of the image, judging from my experience, I knew it had a great chance to be a comet though it had only single coordinate.
I filled some useful information including my name and coordinate in the cometform. Then I kept waiting. I knew, it was a key time, I shall be more patience. I refreshed the LASCO web frequetly. And just at about 22:04, the image of 1354UT came out! I downloaded it quickly. Very soon, I found there was more coordinate to support my claim. I filled it in and submitted my claim. Thanks to my proxyn and the speed of my net, all of these processes were finished in 26 seconds!! Shall it be miraculous?  Maybe!
I backed to the LASCO, the image of 1406UT has come out just after the 1331UT. I checked it and proved that it was my second SOHO comet! The report which I posted is below:

My first SOHO comet

C/2005 W7 (SOHO), detected on 19 Nov, 2005

(C3 frames)

Discovery Story:
I’ve just finished my fall-trip to the Happy Valley in Shenzhen with my classmates. When I got home, it was half past five in the evening. I was very tired and sitting down at my computer. ‘How about searching for comets in the LASCO images now?’  I thought.
So I did. I got to the LASCO and the comet reporting page as quickly as I could, and launched the Comethunter, which is a software designed to search SOHO comets. Soon, I found an object moving towards the sun regularly and getting brighter in the Kreutz area. After measuring the coordinates, I was sure that it was a real one. I pressed the submit botton swiftly and found no one had stepped before me. It was about half past seven in the evening at that moment. Here was the report:

Waiting for the next images is a boring but exciting process when you have reported your claim, especially you are the newuser. Just waiting, waiting and waiting~~’Oh, the image of 1142UT come out!!’  I opened the image with the Comethunter nervously, and was very excited to find there was more coordinates to support my claim. Yeah, I am successful to my first SOHO comet! My heart was soon relaxing, but it still kept beating quickly, just seemed that had just finished the competitive running game. As Tony said, my effort and dedication has finally paid off.
Certainly, I made some further posts:

When you see the animation above, maybe you can find that there is the other comet just to the right of mine. Exactly  you’re right, it was discovered by Jiangao Ruan, who is from Guangxi. A lot of my friends have asked me why I hadn’t found it.  It was funny to answer this question was that the pointer had covered it!
Maybe I shall leave a chance to Jiangao. Uh…Deuce knows!

Alright, the below one is also the animation of my first comet:

(C2 frames)

Looking at the animation(C2’s one), you can find three comets in the images after 08:30UT. The brightest one is mine, the fainter one is Jiangao’s. The faintest one which mightbe the component of mine was discovered by Quanzhi, who is my friend.

The comet is the 1150th SOHO comet and its designation is C/2005 W7 (SOHO). The orbit element is available here: K05Y14.
