Today’s Work

I grasped some time to do these work tht seem to attract me quite a lot, after studying GRE.

First I finished da positional measurements of two bright sungrazers — SOHO 2025 and SOHO 2026 both in C3 images. Da work of positional measurements in HI1B has ady completed ystday morning. Strangely I used to think tht da former one would b fainter than da latter one, judging from their appearance in HI1B images when they were still relatively far away from da sun. However da fact proved me wrong. SOHO 2025 plunged into da corona with a narrow tail, finally exhausted in da heat, which put da sungrazer’s splendid performance to an end. Another comet SOHO 2026 only shown a vague tail in C3 images, n its brightness was fainter too. Here come my positional n photometric measurements:

When I get enough time I’l interpolate da space vectors for both da comets. I think these two comets share da same precursor, which s priliminarily thot to disintegrate into two major components mayb not so long ago. Computation work l b able to reveal da fact, or at least l disclose a state tht s close to da reality for me.

Secondly, I computed an orbital solution for recently-discovered Marsden group comet SOHO 2024, which s supsected to b da third return of 1999 N5 = 2005 G2. Only by receiving Rainer’s kind help tht he interpolated all da vectors for me (Danke! 🙂 ) could I progress so fast. I know tht establishing linkage work with FindOrb s not so excellent. Instead, Exorb, another powerful software tht s oso applied in orbital computation work, outmaneuver FindOrb. Yet unluckily I dint learn it well. Hence I still sticked to FindOrb. Rather than doin any linkage work, I checked their own Tisserand. C my solutions as follows:

As seen from da pix, da Tisserand criterion s close to each other, which means tht they might b da same object in different apparitions, or at least close related. (A bit nonsense? Of coz they’r closely related since they both belong to Marsden group.. Ah.. I don’t know…) I dont know y I failed to solve d orbital solution for 1999 N5. FindOrb did give me a solution but evidently it was irrational at all. I’l try again when I’m free enough. Surely I’l learn more about how to establish linkage work with Exorb. I think Rainer now s working to solve dis linkage work. Mayb tmr, or da day after tmr, he’l get an answer.

I hav again failed to measure their C2 positions. Frankly speaking, as pointed out by Rainer, Astrometrica s not suitable to conduct such work as da plate constant s still too low for a C2 image, moreover, plentitude of noise points cause great interference to Astrometrica so that da software will find itself hard to indentify *truly real* reference stars even when they’v been manually aligned well with da stars in C2. Only by erasing da noise points one by one manually in some software, if da stars r bright enough in C2’s FOV, can Astrometrica solve da problem… Quite time-consuming certainly ><

Yet unluckily I don't get enough time at all to do all of these work as I'v been busily preoccupied with da comin GRE test diz year. I won't get enough time to interpolate da needed space vectors at d observed time either… So I juz leave simple measurements alone here. Once I turn available, hopefully I'l try to make further analysis if ther doesn't turn out to b too many comets.

  庚寅的冬日格外寒冷。奶奶便此長眠而去了。
  記得那日早上,還未睡醒。阿婆便走上來對我說舅父打電話來,說父親找我,奶奶走了。
  我不敢相信,覺得在做夢。
  靜了靜,再打了電話給三姑媽,電話裏很吵雜,她略帶哽咽地言道,奶奶不行了,快回來看吧,以後見不到了。
  怎麼會呢?不會的。還會好的。
  父親隨後又打電話來,讓我趕緊下市區。晚上坐大巴廻去。
  下午收拾好東西後,便坐巴士從聯和下了。
  是日廣州剛剛轉晴,天空中的雲還未散盡。過柯木塱時,看到一輪紅日透出雲彩,漸漸淪於青綠色的小山丘後。
  凌晨五點,在睡覺的我被一陣刺骨的寒風凍醒。原來車到了張黃,正在落客。透過散射的燈光看到,外面正落著毛毛細雨。半小時後到了龍門。
  進了屋子,都沒睡。大伯和三姑媽都在。奶奶——原來已經去了——尋日早便已去了。所謂的「不行了」竟然是這個含義。沒想到,沒想到……
  隔著蚊帳看到,奶奶雙眼緊閉,如在睡夢中一般。只是面色已黃,沒了呼吸。
  下午開始做法事,一直到翌日早晨。
  奶奶躺入棺材的樣子,我這一世都忘不了。
  棺材埋在了西側那座小丘的東北坡,與阿爺的墳為鄰。物化後,二老得以相聚,亦算得是喜事吧。
  山崗上長滿了捻子,還有許多俗名喚作「掃把草」的雜草,正開著淡黃的小花朵,迎著北風搖曳。還有矮矮的松樹,如守墓人一般佇立。
  近俯看小鎮,遠眺六萬大山的座座青山連綿。亦算上是好風景罷!
  我小時候是奶奶湊的,恩情尚未報,人便已去矣。徒留遺憾,除此復有何用?
  蘇軾云:「人生到處知何似,應似飛鴻踏雪泥。泥上偶然留指爪,鴻飛那復計東西。」
  是此謂也!

I got reply from Rainer very soon after I contacted him. He pointed out that da impact was on da sun rather than d earth… >< I immediately reviewed my result. Ya… Da predicted impact time s very close to its perihelion time. Thus it's impossible to b an earth impact at all! How careless I was! Yet I think d author of FindOrb need to add more info about d impacted object so as to avoid confusion like mine…

It's really interesting to measure n calculate orbital elements… Really wish I'l make more progress soon 🙂 Thx Rainer for helping me so much! Without his aids I'm afraid I'd hav been much more laggard than today..

Notice that the designation SOHO-2018 s juz my intuition tht Karl’l give it. Official confirmations havn’t released yet. I measured the comet within HI1A n HI1B data. N all these data were fed to FindOrb. Then I acquired the result:

Judging from the elements it must b a Kreutz group member, yet the calculation indicates an impact on d earth at lat +47.96437 lon 166.39848 on 2 Feb 2011 12:18:54.21, which s very ridiculous! Da comet has moved smoothly toward da sun n finally exhausted as it plunged into da scorcher. I dun known y this happens. So I’v consulted Rainer bout da problem. Still awaitin his reply…

Btw, d ephemerides of this comet was oso computed; mayb ground-based observers may hav a try to sweep regions close to this one in this season to find potential bright Kreutz group comets in return.
